Comic book series are booming business these days, and FX wants in. The network has ordered an 8-episode first season of X-Men themed Marvel series Legion. With this move, FX departs from its usual brand of high-concept dramas such as The Americans and American Crime Story but also from its brand of horror series such as American Horror Story and The Strain.

Legion stars Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey) and Aubrey Plaza (Parks And Recreation). It revolves around David Haller (Stevens), a young man who has been in and out of psychiatric hospitals for his schizophrenia since he was a teenager. After a strange encounter with a fellow patient, Haller is confronted with the possibility that the voices he hears and visions he sees might be real.

This marks the first live-action Marvel series on cable, joining ABC series Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Netflix package consisting of five series and a miniseries. Legion is expected to premiere in early 2017.
