ABC Predictions: Likely Renewals for The Whispers and The Astronaut Wives Club

The Whispers

Since it is the slow part of the broadcast season, we will also take it slow with our renewal and cancellation predictions. That means that until mid-September, our predictions will come every other week. So check back in two weeks for our latest predictions!

ABC has quite a full summer lineup: four scripted series are airing on the alphabet network. One of them, namely Mistresses, has lost one of its major characters when Alyssa Milano decided to not continue with the series. The series’ ratings are slightly below the 1.0 mark, but it is still the highest rating series of the four.

The Whispers started off a lot higher than Mistresses. It managed a 1.5 for its series premiere, but quickly dropped before settling on a 0.8. It is usually not a good sign when a series that is still airing its first season scores below a series that has been airing for three seasons, like Mistresses has. However, The Whispers is heavily DVR-ed. The cast options for this series have expired so a second season would likely also mean some cast changes, but we will still give the series the benefit of the doubt and predict it a Likely Renewal.

Then there is The Astronaut Wives Club. The series has remained fairly steady in the ratings after its initial post-premiere drop. It is now scoring about as high as The Whispers in the adults 18-49 ratings. By now it is unlikely the series will go up in the ratings, and therefore the question is: are these ratings still high enough for ABC to make a profit? As with The Whispers, the series will get the benefit of the doubt for now and it is therefore a Likely Renewal.

Finally, we have Rookie Blue. The series has been scoring the lowest ratings, but this doesn’t necessarily spell doom. Read why Rookie Blue is getting away with lower ratings here.
